DESCRIPTION: This course explores the clinical techniques of group process through Irving Yalom’s interpersonal approach to group psychotherapy in both inpatient and outpatient settings applied in the context of DMT.

RATIONALE: The ability to lead effective therapy groups, both verbal and DMT, depends on the facilitator’s knowledge of group dynamics. As students develop observation and assessment skills directly related to interpersonal dynamics, they [students] are better prepared in developing treatment objectives, treatment plans and future goals that are based upon these dynamics. Knowledge of Yalom’s approach to the therapeutic process serves to strengthen the students’ skills as a clinician. The student will also have the experience of being in a training group during the semester allowing them [students] the opportunity to directly experience dynamics as they present themselves in peer group.
