The Creative Arts Therapies in Child and Adolescent Inpatient Care

During this one hr program, you will get a brief didactic and experiential introduction into the practice of creative arts therapies in a short term child and adolescent inpatient psychiatric unit. In this setting, creative arts therapists are meant to work alongside a larger treatment team to support youth during an acute period of psychiatric symptoms before they are discharged and connected to various levels of more long-term treatment in the community. We will explore the way that dance/movement, mindfulness, writing, humor-based, and meditative practices can support a sense of stability and comfort with accessible and concrete experiential practices. Come ready to move, create, and laugh as we experience the ways that even the briefest creative arts therapy practice can encourage emotional regulation and adaptive coping strategies during times of crisis.

Course Description: Clinical supervision is an essential component of the progression of development for novice therapists, with researchers suggesting that supervision has become the primary means for ongoing counselor growth and development. In this one-hour workshop, participants will learn about the history and evolving understanding of dance/movement therapy specific supervision, emerging with a definition and basic theoretical underpinnings of the practice. Akin to this, the workshop will provide an overview of techniques and practices commonly utilized as well as supervisee learning outcomes for DMT supervision. In this sexual harassment prevention and response workshop, participants will learn what constitutes sexual harassment, what to do if one experiences or witnesses sexual harassment, how to report sexual harassment, and related laws and policies. This workshop will draw upon the bountiful resource of clinicians’ embodiment to deepen their understanding of Thomas Kitwood’s Person-Centered Care as a lens for working with people who have dementia.
